#143 Intermittent Fasting

Chiropractic West Bend WI Nutrition

Intermittent fasting or time restricted eating is a very popular concept these days.

The actual science points to restricting your eating to a 8-10 hour window. This means, you would eat all your food for the day and drink all your liquid calories between say 12-8pm or 9-7pm.

There is not much science supporting multiple day fasts and shorter eating windows seem to lend themselves to overeating, so they don’t work as well.

This helps your gastric system completely clear and helps your body regulate your blood sugar, which helps improve metabolism and minimize fat storage.

Intermittent fasting is very healthy for your liver and would also help with non-alcoholic, fatty liver disease, which didn’t exist 30 years ago and is now a gigantic problem.

There are a few concepts to keep in mind. Number one, do your best to not eat the first hour of the day and the last 2 hours of the day. This also includes liquid calories like wine, soda, or juice.

Coffee, water and tea are fine and won’t influence your blood sugar. You can also have a little bit of fat, like coconut oil without effecting your blood sugar.

You can put some lime or lemon juice and salt in your water for electrolytes and to help expedite your digestion, so you get to a fasted state sooner.

Also, you want to keep the same schedule on the weekends, so keep that in mind when creating your schedule.

I would shoot for an 8-hour window. That way if you cheat a bit, you are still inside the 10 hour window.

When you eat is just as important as what you eat, which is a fact I didn’t understand years ago.
